An average backyard pool in Orange County produces 30–50 tons of mixed material once it's broken out: gunite, plaster, rebar, dirt fill, and decking. Hauling is the silent budget killer on a pool demo.
Partial vs. full removal
Most OC homeowners go partial: break the gunite, punch drainage holes, bury the rubble, top with dirt and compact. Cheaper, faster, but the lot has to be disclosed as "had a pool" on resale.
Full removal pulls everything out and fills with engineered soil. More expensive, but the lot resells as buildable.
How many lowboy loads you'll need
A typical 14x28 pool full removal generates 4–6 lowboy loads of mixed gunite + dirt. At $925 per mixed load, hauling alone is $4625 on the high end — and it's still cheaper than per-ton roll-off pricing.
Permits
Every OC city requires a pool demolition permit. Plan 1–3 weeks of lead time.
Logistics
